"When my students log on for UITPS, why are the tests listed in the middle and on the left? Does it make a difference which one they use?"

Good question, Mary. I really don't know why the tests are listed in the two places, except for the fact that you can set up your student page to either show the test/folder structure or "tree" on the left or not. If you set it not to show the tree, then the only place the tests will be listed is in the middle of the page.

To change this setting, log into your UTIPS account. Hover your mouse over "Profile" and click on "My Page."

At the bottom of this window, there will be a "Type" button with two options, With Tree and Without Tree (see image). If you choose Without Tree, the tests will only be listed once.

Don't worry too much about it, though, since it does not matter which link your students select - they will both go to the same test. You may want to turn the tree off just to make it less confusing to your students.
