Adding images to a UTIPS question.

Working with media in UTIPS is not very intuitive, so hopefully these instructions will make sense. One thing to note, Firefox on either platform does not work right now with uploading images. Use Safari on the Mac, or use Internet Explorer on the PC.

Here are the steps for adding media to a question that has not already been uploaded:
- Click on the desired test.
- Click in the check box in front of the question to be edited.
- On the Menu Bar, click on Question --> Edit.
- Click on the Media button after the question.
- Click on the New button.
- Click on the Upload a File button.
- Navigate to the location of the media.
- Click on the media and then click on Open. One note - make sure that the name of the file does not have any spaces or special characters, and also has the .jpg, .gif, or .png at the end. If not, you will receive an error.
- Click the Update button to accept the changes.

If you have already uploaded your image or media, here are the steps that you need to follow:
- Select the desired test.
- Click in the check box in front of the question to be edited.
- On the Menu Bar, click on Question --> Edit.
- Click on the Media button after the question, and choose Browse.
- UTIPS will look like it has not done anything, but it is really waiting for you to select the media to insert. To do this, click on your home disk icon (at the top of the test/folder list on the left of the screen). A list of the media or images that have been previously uploaded will appear.
- Click in the check box next to the name of the image/media that you want to insert
- Go to the UTIPS menu bar and hover your mouse over Media, then move down and click on Copy.
- UTIPS should go back to your question, with a small thumbnail image of the media that you have inserted into the question.
- Click the Update button to accept the changes.

Uploading Student Data from SIS to UTIPS

Theresa Wilson from SESC sent along this information and thought that it might be useful information for this audience:

I worked on uploading SIS student data to UTIPS and kept having the file show up with problems when I checked the file in the UTIPS Admin tool. Turned out that I was saving the text file as Unicode in Notepad and it was putting some kind of invisible data in front of my first line. When I saved the same file as ANSI and checked the file in UTIPS it worked and uploaded great! Now the next big questions about the upload for me are:

  1. How to remove the previous term student data without removing test data,

  2. How to rearrange the information in the “class_title” column so that it makes sense for the student login (in most schools it is nice to have it say “1st Hour Math 7” instead of “TeacherName – Class Name – Period” because it alphabetizes the way the data is imported)

Please leave a comment if you have further questions or information about uploading student data to UTIPS from SIS.

Thanks, Theresa!

How Do I Change My Title?

Did this happen to you when you first set up your UTIPS account?

"I was wondering if I can change my title. I got lazy and didn't read as carefully towards the end, and well, now I have a stupid title. It makes my site a little confusing. Is there a way to change that after the fact? If you could let me know. I would appreciate that. Thanks again."

This happens a lot. The account set up IS a little confusing. When you are normally asked for your title, you respond with what you do - Teacher, Educator, Principal... etc. The title in UTIPS should be what your students usually refer to you as - to YOU, not to your back. :)

Which Test Do I Click On?

"When my students log on for UITPS, why are the tests listed in the middle and on the left? Does it make a difference which one they use?"

Mary E. from Washington Co.

Good question, Mary. I really don't know why the tests are listed in the two places, except for the fact that you can set up your student page to either show the test/folder structure or "tree" on the left or not. If you set it not to show the tree, then the only place the tests will be listed is in the middle of the page.

To learn how to fix it so that tests only appear in one list, click the Read More! link below.
